Joseph Culp

(30 Oct 1856 - 1 Mar 1923)

Joseph and Jennie were married in the home of Priestly Stokes. According to their grandson, Paul Culp, they had a 280 acre farm ten miles east of Anna off of Lick Creek Road. Paul vividly remembers that they had apple and peach orchards, grew corn, wheat, oats and hay, and raised pigs. Union County property records indicate that Joseph made his initial purchase of 40 acres on March 21, 1883. This was seven days after his marriage to Jennie. As remembered by Paul, their farm was on New Hope Road, across and behind New Hope Church. Joseph died of pneumonia brought on by influenza. Dr. Thomas Jefferson Rich, whose daughter Martha, married Joseph's son Clifton, signed the Death Certificate. The farm was sold on 28 April 1924 for $4,500.00. BURIAL: Funeral services were at First Methodist Episcopal Church. The hymn selections sung by the First Baptist Choir were Asleep In Jesus, Safe In The Arms of Jesus, and Nearer My God To Thee. Deacons and Trustees from the New Hope Baptist Church served as Pallbearers. Joseph is buried in the Anna Cemetery beside Jennie (tombstone photograph available).
