James Ridgeway Culp

(21 Feb 1839 - 9 Nov 1861)

James was the first known Culp of his line to break the Mennonite influence by becoming part of a military body. He joined the Union Army on 26 August,1861, and was fatally wounded at the Battle of Belmont (Belmont, MO). He was moved the short distance from the battlefield to a field hospital across the Mississippi River in Columbia, Kentucky. It was there that he "officially died".
