Individual Details

Silas FREEMAN

(10 Jan 1775 - 3 Nov 1836)

The 1800 Census lists Silas as head of household in Cayuga County, New York. The household includes [names are best guess] 1 male under 10 (Hezekiah), 1 male between 16 and 25 (Silas), 2 females under 10 (Polly, unknown), and 1 female between 16 and 25 (Sarah).
The 1810 Census lists Silas [Lilas] as head of household in Brutus, Cayuga County. The household includes [names are best guess] 2 males under 10 (Darius, Walter), 1 male between 26 and 44 (Silas), 3 females under 10 (Olive, Hannah, Harriet), 1 female between 10 and 13 (Polly), and 1 Female between 26 and 44 (Sally). Providing the census count is correct, this leaves speculation that Hezekiah has died by this time.
The 1820 Census lists Silas as head of household in Brutus. The household includes [names are best guess] 2 males under 10 (Leonard, Lewis), 1 male 10 through 15 (Walter), 1 male 16 through 18 (Darius), 1 male 45 and over (Silas), 2 females under 10 (Caroline, Sally), 2 females 10 through 15 (Hannah, Harriet), 2 females 16 through 25 (Polly, Olive), 1 female 26 through 44 (Sarah). Providing the census count is correct, this leaves 1 male 16 through 25 unaccounted for. Speculation would be the husband of either Polly or Olive; John Bowen or Horace Bartlett, or that the 1810 census is wrong and it is Hezekiah.
The publication "Edson, Obed, History of Chautauqua County, New York, Boston, Mass., W. A. Fergusson, 1894" indicates: Silas Freeman, with 13 children, came to Clymer Hill in 1828. From the information we have now there would have been 12 children. As of 2016 speculation still surrounds Hezekiah, or the history book is in error.
The 1830 Census lists Silas as head of household in Clymer, Chautauqua County, New York. The household includes, [names are best guess] 2 males between 5 and 10 (John, Eldon), 1 male between 10 and 15 (Lewis), 1 male between 15 and 20 (Leonard), 1 male between 50 and 60 (Silas), 1 female between 10 and 15 (Sarah Marie), and 1 female between 50 and 60 (Sarah).
Silas' headstone reads "Silas Freeman-Died Nov. 3, 1836-Aged 62 Yrs." In the same burial lot as Silas and Sarah lies an unreadable stone. Could possibly be Hezekiah or Hannah, best speculation is it is Hezekiah.
At the time of Silas' death, there were 3 children under the age of 18; Lewis, John, and Ethan.
Silas served in the War of 1812. The New York Veterans Burial Cards references his War of 1812 service and is buried in Clymer with location of grave at B37.
