Birth
According to Gloria Megdal Schwartz Ethel's birthday was about April 12, 1883, and she went to school in Koenigsberg, Prussia. My analysis of the records indicate that a birthdate of 1885 is more likely. The 4 censuses give a range between 1884 and 1886. The birth certificate of her son Benjamin gives 1885 and 1885 agrees with her immigration record; thus, I estimate her birth as 1885.Immigration
On September 13, 1904, the SS Noordam arrived at New York with Chaie Schmidt age 56 from Mariampol with her daughter Judes age 19. They were headed to Max Cohen in New York City [E-0969]Census (family)

The 1923 Chicago City Directory lists him as a peddler living at 1629 S. Hamlin Ave.Census (family)
In 1930 they were living at 1629 S. Hamlin with their children, her parents and a son in law and granddaughter. They owned the house worth $9000 and he owned a butcher shop. He had applied for naturalization.Census (family)

The following obit appeared in the January 31, 1960, Los Angeles Times:"Ethel Megdal, beloved mother of Herman Megdal, Jerome Megdal, Mrs. Sara Swislow, Mrs. Lea Steinberg and Mrs. Gloria Schwartz; also survived by 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Services at 2 p.m. Sunday, Mount Sinai Memorial Park Chapel. Mount Sinai Mortuary in charge."
