Zelma Lomnes, 79, Former Teacher, Dies September 1
Miss Zelma Lomnes, 79, formerly of 510 Division street, Hudson, died Wednesday, Sept. 1 at St. Croix County hospital at New Richmond after an extended illness.
The daughter of Andrew and Mary (Peterson) Lomnes she was born October 1, 1891 in Hudson. She received her education in Hudson schools (HHS, 1911), River Falls State Teachers College and University of Minnesota.
She taught rural schools of Wisconsin and North Dakota and sixth grade in Hannah, North Dakota, Hudson and sub-normal children in Albert Lea and Fargo, North Dakota. For one year she was director in a home for dependent children in Minneapolis. She retired from teaching because of ill health.
She was an active member of Mercy Rebekah lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and participated for many years in fund raising campaigns, notably the cancer drive.
She was a member of the First Presbyterin church in Hudson since 1907.
She received a Certificate of Award from the American Cancer Society and was honored with other past Girl Scout Leaders by the Women's Society.
She is survived by three nephews and two nieces, Eldon Lomnes of Lompoc, Calif., Jerome Lomnes and Byron Neher, both of Hudson, Dr. June Dahl of Madison, and Mrs. Murilyn Skeath of Bayport.
Funeral services were Tuesday, September 7 at Kramer Funeral Home in Hudson with Rev. Gerben Van Putten officiating. Interment was in Willow River cemetery.
