Mary Krattley

(1869 - 1886)

Poor Mary. So little is known about this girl who emigrated with her mother and two brothers at about age 5 only to die in most horrible way 12 years later. Her marker in St. Patrick's cemetery, Hudson, gives her date of birth as 1869 and date of death as 1886. I asked Theresa if she recalled hearing anything about Mary's death. She said that although Mary had died a number of years before she was born, she remembers hearing the family speak of her death. Mary was a teenager, walking home from school, when she was attacked and raped. She was able to crawl home but died a short time. The assailant was presumed to be a tramp though it was rumored that it was a local man who lived along what is now Krattley Lane and considered to be a little odd. To her knowledge nothing was ever proved. (Conversation with Theresa Gartmann Dierks, 17Nov1991).
