Mrs. Anne Kees Jensen, 87, a Hudson native, who resided in Lakeland for about 35 years, died Saturday, Jan. 18, at Hudson Memorial Hospital. She had been hospitalized after a fall, but death was attributed to a heart attack.
A rosary was said Monday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at the Swanson Funeral Home by the Ladies Council of St. Patrick's church followed by a prayer service by the American Legion Auxiliary. The rosary was repeated again at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
The funeral mass was said at St. Francis of Assisi church in Lakeland Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. F. J. Barthelme officiating.
Interment was in St. Patrick's Catholic cemetery in Hudson, with Ray Wagoner, Roger Trapp, Henry Lombard, Loren Leistiko, Christ Flattum and John Larson as casketbearers.
Anne Mary Lombard was born in Hudson, Nov. 8, 1887, the daughter of Eugene and Mary (Moriarity) Lombard. She attended local school.
As a girl in her late teens, she set type by hand at the Star & Times, now the Hudson Star-Observer, in the first decade of the twentieth century, and she frequently recalled her employmnet at the newspaper and her boss, the late Byron J. Price, then editor of the Star & Times.
In 1908 she was married to Richard Kees, a member of one of Hudson's earliest families.
Richard Kees died in 1936. He was the son of Andrew and Jane (Steets) Kees, and the grandson of William and Mary (Morrison) Steets Kees, and the grandson of William and Mary (Morrison) Steets who were among Hudson's first settlers. Richard Kees was the great grandson of William Morrison (1785-1866) who is credited with discovering in 1803 Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi river. Morrison was a fur trader employed by Astor's American Fur company.
After the death of her husband, Anna Kees moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota to care for a relative, but then in 1939 came to Lakeland, Minnesota which remained her home until her death.
In Hudson she was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic church where she was organist for a number of years in the 1920s. She also was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the Women's Relief Corps.
She was one of the charter members of St. Francis of Assisi church in Lakeland and was the organist there.
On August 4, 1951 she was married in Stillwater to Leo Jensen of Lakeland who died in 1955.
Surviving are the three sons, John R. Kees of Sun City, Arizona, Francis E. Kees of Youngtown, Arizona, and Thomas W. Kees, 1219 First St., Hudson; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a son Eugene A., preceded her in death in 1928, as did four brothers and three sisters.
