Descendent of Earliest Pioneer Family Succumbs After Short Illness
Funeral services for Richard A. Kees, a native resident of Hudson, were held at St. Patrick's church last Saturday morning, June 13, Rev. Monsignor Owens officiating. Interment took place in the Catholic cemetery here. He was 2 years old and his death came as a deep shock to his many friends in his home community.
Mr. Kees was born in Hudson on May 12, 1884, the son of Andrew Kees and Jane Steets Kees, who were numbered among Hudson's earliest pioneers. His mother, Jane Steets Kees, who was past eighty years old when she died three years ago, was also born here and she had the distinction of being one of the first residents of this city. Consequently Mr. Kees was the descendent of one of Hudson's earliest pioneer families.
Mr. Kees was educated in the public schools of Hudson. When a very young man he started work as a carpenter, learning the trade from his uncle, the late Richard Steets.
In the fall of 1908, Mr. Kees was married to Miss Anne Lombard of this city. In the spring of 1909 he moved to Langdon, North Dakota, where he worked at his trade as a carpenter and took an active part in the city band and baseball team. In August, 1909, he returned to Hudson and in October of that year he took a position as carpenter in the coach shop of the Omaha car repair shops here, a position which he held up until the time he taking ill on May 26, 1936.
His illiness continued and on Memorial Day he was taken to St. Joseph's hospital, St. Paul, for observation and treatment. On Thursday, June 4, he was stricken with pneumonia from which he failed to rally and he passed away last Wednesday afternoon, June 10.
Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons, John R. Kees of St. Paul, Frances E. Kees of Hudson, and Thomas W. Kees of Baraboo, Wisconsin. One son preceded him in death eight years ago. One brother, John Kees of Hudson, also survives.
