Charles Craig FURR

Ellen PercyMiller stated, "What I know is that Charles Craig Furr, Jr. came to Prince William County from Augusta County, near Staunton, Va. His daughter Audry Furr married James Newton Kerr, Mr. Furr's partner in the mill. Mrs. Kerr was employed in the mill as the bookkeeper. The Furrs and later the Kerrs lived in the frame house beside the mill which had been built in the early 1900's. Later Mrs. Kerr built the stone house just down the road for herself and a son. "
"The Furrs and Kerrs bought Chapman's Mill in 1903 for $8,500. In 1908 they sunk another $5,000 in outfitting the mill with new roller milling equipment and they added a 29 foot metal water wheel. They continued to add new equipment but by 1937 this caused them financial difficulties. In 1939 Mr. Kerr died. Mr. Furr took on a new partner and they added more equipment. They had added a diesel engine and had quite an output.By 1945 Furr and partner had sold the mill to Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. (Chrysler cars) and Mr. Furr ran the mill for him until mid 1951 when the Health Dept. closed it down as it did many mills. "
