Death
Ms. Anna Furr Whissen, 89, of Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after being in failing health for the last several months. A daughter of the late Oscar A. and Halsie Snow Furr, she was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Augusta County. She lived the majority of her life in Augusta and Rockingham counties. Mrs. Whissen graduated from Weyers Cave High School and worked for over 30 years at the local phone company prior to her retirement. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the Pioneer Club and the Travel Club. Mrs. Whissen was married to John "Johnnie" W. Whissen, who preceded her in death on Feb. 19,1964. Surviving are a daughter, Susan W. Tysinger of Harrisonburg; two grandsons, Kevin M. Tysinger and Shawn A. Tysinger, both of Harrisonburg; son-in-law, Richard L. Tysinger of Harrisonburg; one sister, Ruth F. Wrenn of Fishersville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a number of brothers and sisters. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Tim McAvoy officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Anna's home, (52 S. Willow St., Harrisonburg). Those desiring to do so, may make memorial contributions to a charity of one's choice. The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
