In June 1996, Carol Petranek went to Mystras and looked in the town record book. Kosta Eftaxas was the first Eftaxas family recorded in the book.
Records started about 1840. The town clerk said that he is preparing to enter the information in the records into a computer.

There was no date listed in the records for Kosta's birth or death , or a place of birth or death.

We originally estimated Kosta's birth year as about 1850; based on the fact that his first wife was born in 1856; and assuming he was 5-6 years older than her.

In the town records, Kosta's parents names were listed as Ioannis and Panagiota. There was no maiden name for Panagiota.

Kosta was married twice. In the town records, there was no marriage date listed for either of Kosta's two marriages.

Carol received an official letter of marriage dated March 29, 2004 from the Diocese of Monemvasias & Sparta, which reads as follows (copy in fireproof box): "Certifies that: As it appears on the books of Marriages of the Office of the Holy Diocese Monemvasias & Spartis a license number 68 was issued on 16 February 1891, for Konstantinos Eutaxiarhis, resident of Mystra - of the former municipality Spartis in second marriage, and for Stathoula Zaharaki daughter of Dimitrios, resident of Theologos - of the former municipality Sellasias in first marriage. The holy matrimony was officiated by the local priest S. Dimitrakopoulou. The present certificate is issued to be used where needed.

The head of the Diocese in is stead High Priest Hyrsostomos Stavropoulos."

The name Eftaxias means «in order». It is possible to be a name with Byzantine origin because in Eastern Roman empire they used to adopt such names. It is very rare surname and I think all people in Laconia who have it are blood related. I have spotted it in two villages. In Lagia of inner Mani and in Mystra near Sparti. I am 90% sure that they are related somehow.In my opinion some members of Eftaxias family from Lagia moved to Mystra after 1821 (Greek revolution). During Greek revolution eastern Maniots sieged Mystra and captured the castle. Many of them stayed afterwards. Maybe one of them was from Eftaxias family.
Lagia
The oldest Eftaxias we know in this village is Michalis Eftaxias, who took part in the revolution (1821). He was born around 1800. He had a son named Vrettos for sure. Vrettos had two sons Michalis (born 1826) and Panayiotis (born in 1832). (Elections list of Lagia 1875).
Mystra
The oldest Eftaxias we know in this city (it was city back then) is Ioannis Eftaxias born around 1815. He had a son named Kostantinos (born in 1840).
In election list of 1872 we found two more Eftaxias family members. Giorgos Eftaxias (born in 1848) and Dimitrios Eftaxias with no name of their father. We can not match if they are brothers.

Eftaxias family was part of a clan (blood related families with different names) named Ksifomaheridianoi. Other family branches of this clan are Kassimis, Royssakos, and Kapylorihos. All stayed inLagia.
