The document is a list of farmers, and is created for the Minister of Economics for the purpose of collecting taxes. Next to Ioannis' name is the number 3, which indicates that there are 3 people in his family who will be taxed as farmers. In this document, only 2 men are from Mystras -- Ioannis Eftaxopoulos on line 2, and Dimitris Zaharakis on line 1 with 6 people. (my Zaharakis family is from Theologos, so this is a different family).

In Sparta, today, on the 23rd of month December, day Monday, and at 11 am, of year 1863, Panagiotis Sampatis, farmer-landowner and resident of Diaselo of Mystras of the Municipality of Sparta, and Ioannis Eftaxias, peasant-shepherd and resident of Mystras of the Municipality of Sparta, both known to me and legal men, appeared before me, notary and resident of Sparta,Konstantinos Dimopoulos, at my notarial office, located at my house which is at the east of the Church of the Annunciation of Theotokos. In the presence of the witnesses signing below, they asked me to compose the present agreement document, after I explained them the provisions of article 173 of the Organization of Courts and Notaries, and I was assured about their will, as needed, […] and they stated the following: a’) Panagiotis Sampatis declared that from this dayhe gives Ioannis Eftaxias 30 valued and already given to him sheep […] worth of 240 drachmas. They all have the following age: a sheep […], two sheep 10 months old, four sheep 8 months old, four sheep 6 months old, three sheep 4 monthsold, four sheep […], seven female sheep, […] and a big ram: in total thirty(30). Ioannis Eftaxias will have them and will be taking care of them

andwill be protecting and using them as of his own from today until three years later, when the agreement will be annulled. b’) Ioannis Eftaxias has to give Panagiotis Sampatis fifty (50) okas from the cheese producted, ten (10) okas ofwool and two (2) sheep from his pasture until year 1864. In the other twofollowing years, 1865 and 1866, [Ioannis Eftaxias has to give Panagiotis] sixty(60) okas of cheese, ten (10) okas of wool and three (3) sheep per year. Also,if Ioannis Eftaxias fails to give Panagiotis the above mentioned in time, hewill have to reimburse Panagiotis for the current pasture at the marketplace ofSparta. At the end of the agreement, in December 1866, he (Ioannis) has to return the mentioned sheep in the same quality and at the same age he was giventhem unless a great godsend catastrophe happens[1].And if Ioannis Eftaxias fails to return all the sheep he was given, he’ll haveto pay eight (8) drachmas for each one of them, in total 240 drachmas. […]also, at the same time, he’ll pay Panagiotis for the deficit created by thesheep’s delayed return. Ioannis Eftaxias stated that he accepts the agreement above, after getting the mentioned sheep today, and promises to give Panagiotis Sampatis his share[2] intime and to fully satisfy his obligations without any excuses. And as an indication was the present agreement contract created, which, after being read sufficiently and loudly before the stipulatorsand the witnesses, Ioannis G.

In Sparta, today, on the 2nd of month October, day Saturday, and at 10am, of year 1865, Aikaterini, daughter of the late Dimitrios Bosinis and widow of Panagiotis Sampatis, housekeeper with no occupation, resident of the village of Diaselo of the Municipality of Sparta and protector of the underage children of P. Sampatis: 1) Dimitrios, 2) Ioannis, 3) Ilias and 4) Theodoros,and, on the other hand, Ioannis Eftaxias, farmer and resident of Mystras of theMunicipality of Sparta, appeared before me, notary and resident of Sparta,Konstantinos Dimopoulos, at my notarial office, located at my house which is at the east of the Church of the Annunciation of Theotokos. And, in the presence of the witnesses signing below they stated the following.

Aikaterini,widow of Panagiotis Sampatis said that today, under her above mentioned capacity, she received from Ioannis Eftaxias all the thirty sheep mentioned abovein this very contract at the proper age and quality, as well as the proper amount of cheese and wool, and, so, she considers the above renting contractfully receipted and the tenant, Ioannis Eftaxias, cleared of the debt. On theother hand, the tenant, Ioannis Eftaxias, stated that after giving the thirtysheep and the cheese and wool to Aikaterini, widow of P. Sampatis and natural protector of her children, he recognizes the paying off of the contract above.Thus, the present discharge of debt document was created, which, after being read sufficiently and loudly to the stipulators and the witnesses, Mr.Dimitrios G. Krytikos, grocer and resident of Mystras of the Municipality ofSparta, and Vasileios Argyropoulos, farmer and resident of Logkastra of the Municipality of Sparta, both Greek citizens known to me, and after being confirmed, was signed by them and by me, except for Aikaterini, who claimed that she’s illiterate.
