AMARILLO (AP) - Final rites for Mrs. C.W. Furr, widow of a man who fashioned a country store into a five-state supermarket and cafeteria chain, are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Polk Street Methodist Church. Mrs. Furr died Monday night in High Plains Baptist Hospital in Amarillo. She was 89. She and her husband had moved to Amarillo in 1928 from the Panhandle town of Kirkland, where he established the Kirkland Mercantile Co. in 1904. Furr died in 1947. The small store grew into the present-day Furr's, Inc., which has 88 supermarkets and cafeterias in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado and Arizona. Survivors include two sons, Roy Furr of Lubbock and Key Furr of Amarillo; a daughter, Mrs. J. Lee Sparks of Amarillo; and a brother, the Rev. Willis Furr of Memphis, Tenn.Published in Borger News Herald, July 31, 1968.
