Death
ALBEMARLE — Bertha Furr Speights, 87, 16406 St. Martin Road, died Saturday (Jan. 9, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 17, 1911, in Stanly County, Mrs. Speights was a daughter of the late Paul Deberry and Mattie Jane Page Furr. A homemaker, she was a member of Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Her husband, James William Speights, preceded her in death. Survivors include sons Gerald Speights, Lucasville, Ohio, Gene Speights, Gastonia, and Jerry Speights, Albemarle; daughter Janie Paige, Oakboro; brother Arthur Furr, Albemarle; sister Bessie Almond, Oakboro; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by Elder Ted Morton. Burial, Bear Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Jerry Speights, 16406-A St. Martin Road.The Salisbury Post, Salisbury, North Carolina, January 11, 1999
