Mary Velma Ritter, known as Velma, was born 16 May 1898 and died 12 January 1984. She married Lawrence Jerome Bright, who was born 23 September 1898 in Monroe County, Mississippi, and died 26 December 1989 at Jackson, Hinds County, Mississippi. He was the son of John E. and Mollie (Crenshaw) Bright. Velma attended Mississippi State Teachers' College in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi (now the University of Southern Mississippi) and received her degree in elementary education from Mississippi State University. She taught first in Amory, Monroe County, Mississippi, and several Monroe County schools before joining the faculty as a second grade teacher at Becker, Mississippi, where she taught until retirement, after thirty-nine years as a teacher. She and her family were members of the Becker Baptist Church.
