Individual Details
William P. Kirkpatrick
(23 Feb 1806 - 22 Aug 1885)
William was born 23 Feb 1806 near Edwardsville in Madison Co., Illinois, and died 22 August 1885, Henry Co., IA. He was a veteran of the Black Hawk War. In March of 1835 he moved his family to Lee Co., IA, where they were among the very first settlers of Clark's Point. He he farmed until 1853, when he moved again to Henry Co., IA. In Lee Co., he held some 320 acres before he moved. He took up 144 acres in Henry Co. Although ostensibly a farmer, William P. Kirkpatrick was also a Methodist Preacher.
He married Mary Pratt on 13 Jan 1831 in Morgan Co., Illinois. She was born 20 Sep 1810 in Cincinnati, OH, and died 23 Apr 1885, in Henry Co., IA. She was sister of Merial Pratt who married Joseph Lane Kirkpatrick, William's brother. Both William and Mary are buried in Bethany-Hussey Cemetery in Henry County. William was a Democrat.
William P. and Mary Kirkpatrick appear on the 1880 census of Baltimore, Henry Co., Iowa.
Fort Madison Daily Democrat, Fort Madison, Iowa, Wednesday, September 23, 1885, Page 8, Col. 5: The flood of life, in rolling on has borne away another sweet life, that of W. P. Kirkpatrick, who died at his home in Baltimore township, Henry county, on the 22d day of August, 1885.
He was born in Illinois in the year 1806 and at the time of his death was 79 years and six months old. "Thou shalt come to the grave in full age like as a shock of corn cometh in its season." He married in 1831 to her who preceded him to the better land four months ago. He immigrated to Iowa in the 1834---before it became a territory, and commenced pioneer life. He was converted in his youthful days and joined the Methodist church. In the year 1865 he joined the Methodist Protestant church and continued a faithful member until death. He was a great sufferer, for many years confined to his chair, but he did not murmur nor complain beneath the chastening rod. But in all his grief and pain he leaned upon his God. His faith was that of Christian assurance, an humble but firm sense of present acceptance, with God in his Jesus Christ. his doctrine was bound up with his ideas of God and his interpretation of scripture, and bore directly on his daily religious life, and seemed to be a shield from the isms and fanaticisms which so distract the faith of many. He was a man of strong convictions, honest in his dealing, firm in his belief; a Methodist in principle; yet not intrusive upon others and charitable to all. Thus was the atmosphere of his life warmed into quickened activity by his earnestness for the coming of the Kingdom of Christ. It was the sunlight of his home in which his wife and children dwelt in love. A good Man's death is a social calamity, and such a calamity is ours in the death of Brother Kirkpatrick. One venerable in years, wise in knowledge, fruitful in experience, generous of heart and beautiful in simplicity; he has passed from terrestrial scenes. His wise and friendly voice so familiar to this circle, is heard no more. The veil, impenetrable to mortal eyes, has been lifted up to usher to scenes profounder far than those of earth.
The funeral service was conducted by the writer, assisted by the Rev. McCorkle, at Bethany church, where a large congregation had assembled to pay the last tribute to him who was loved and respected by all. He was laid in the Bethany graveyard to rest until the resurrection morn. May his mantle fall on his bereft children, and may we all meet in heaven, where there will be no sickness or sorrow, pain or death, that is my prayer. Amen. FRANK BRITTON, LOWELL.
