Individual Details
John Lane Kirkpatrick
(1 Dec 1799 - 1 Feb 1869)
John Lane Kirkpatrick was the second child of Thomas and Mary, born 1 Dec 1799 in Jackson County, Georgia. In 1832 John served as a 2nd Lt. in Captain Nathan Winter's Company, 3d Regiment, Whiteside's Brigade of Mounted Volunteers, Illinois Militia, in the Black Hawk War. John enlisted in Morgain County, Illinois, and in 1855 he applied from the same county for a bounty land warrant for his military service. John appears in the 1830 and 1840 Morgan County censuses. In the 1860 census there is a John Kirkpatrick with a wife Matilda in the Morgan County census. Although there are some discrepancies in this record, it is probable that it is this John and Matilda, and that they were still in Morgan County in 1860.
John L. married Catherine Matilda Sims, daughter of James and Dolly (Spiller) Sims, in Sangamon County, Illinois, 28 December 1824. (We find here name sometimes given as Simms, and it appears she used Matilda as her preferred given name.) Matilda was born in 1804 in South Carolina, and died in McDonough County, Illinois, 8 Jan 1877. John was a Methodist lay preacher and farmer and after a time became a Methodist Circuit Rider. He and his wife lived the latter part of their lives in McDonough County, Illinois. He died 1 Feb 1869. Both are buried in Camp Creek Cemetery near the Ebenezer Methodist Church outside Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois.
