On the 1850 Census with his parents, William Smith is 2 years old. On the 1860 U. S. Census with his parents, William is 12 years old. He was born in 1848 but all other records state 1851.
1880 United States Census of 1st Ward, Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa shows William with his wife Emma and the children William, Edward and Ruth. William is a steam engineer.
1900 United States Census shows William W. with wife, Emma, sons William A., Charles E., Roy J. and Raymond F. living on Clay Street in Dubuque City, Dubuque Co., Iowa. William is listed as a stationary engineer, William A. as locomotive fireman, Charles as machine operator in cracker bakery. Roy J. has no occupation and Raymond F. is at school. Their daughter Hulda is not listed with them. Their daughter, Hulda is on the 1900 census of St. Louis, Missouri listed as missionary living at a home on Franklin Street with four other missionaries.
William W., Ida and their son Raymond are on the 1910 U. S. Census with William A. Smith and his family at 225 Ankeny St. Waterloo, Iowa.

Obituary from The Waterloo Daily Courier, March 12, 1923, page 14. William W. Smith--Paralysis at the home of his son: W. A. Smith of 312 Charles St., Waterloo, Ia. Sat. at 8:30 pm aged 71. He was born Feb. 7, 1851 at Mercy, Erie Co., Pa. [error born at Mercer Co., Pa.] married Nov. [16] 1871 at Lamont, Iowa to Miss Ida E. Hosier. The couple lived at Dubuque before coming to Waterloo in 1903 to live with their son. Mr. Smith was a member of the Court of Honor of Dubuque. Surviving besides the widow are the following children: W. A. Smith of Waterloo, C. Smith Lyons, Ia., Mrs. Ruth Servatius of Casper, Wyo., Miss Hulda Smith of Chicago, R. J. Smith of Orlando., Fla., R. F. Smith of Philadelphia. Funeral service [to] be held Wed. at 2:20 pm from Peterson's Bros. Chapel in charge of [service]. Rev. L. L. Baumgartner pastor the Emanuel Evangelical Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
