Funeral services for Alice Bergan, 86, were held Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiated. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Alice Benilla Bergan, daughter of Samuel and Susanna (Ingles) Hosier, was born Aug. 2, 1898 at North Buena Vista. She died Aug 25 1984 at the Elkader Care Center. She was married to Nathan "Than" Hammond. To this union eight children were born. They lived on a farm in Clayton County near Elkport and Edgewood. For the past 25 years Alice has lived in Postville, becoming a resident of the Elkader Care Center about a month ago.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son Clyde in infancy.
Surviving are three sons:
Raymond Hammond, Independence,
Leo Hammond, Postville, and
LeRoy Hammond, Manchester;
four daughters,
Mrs. Elmer (Sylvia) Schaub, Guttenberg,
Mrs. George (Viola) Huber, LaCrosse, WI,
Mrs. Leters (Velma) Phillips, Lime Springs, and
Mrs, Donald (Bernita) Houdek, Cresco,
19 grandchildren and several great grandcchildren.
