Charles MORAHAN (caution: relationship to brother John not verified)

(Abt 3 Jul 1812 - 9 Nov 1890)

My husband, Joe Gordon, has been DNA-matched by Ancestry with a great-great-great-grandchild of Charles, which is not surprising given that the Morahan surname is uncommon and both Morahan families were from the Carrick-on-Shannon area. However, up until the DNA matching we had come across no evidence to connect the two families. My husband's DNA results indicate that Charles was a close relative of Joe's great-great-grandfather John Morahan who was born probably in the 1810s in probably Co. Leitrim. It is possible Charles and John were brothers but they could also have been first cousins, or otherwise closely related. In order to link them in my family tree I have positioned Charles as a brother of John but, as this relationship has not been proved, I have added a caution.

I have not yet come across any proof, although I think it likely, that Charles's and Joe's family were connected to another Morahan family in Carrick, that of coach builder Bernard Morahan whose sons Thomas (born about 1849) and Joseph (born about 1854) were also in the coach-building business.

Although it appears Charles lived in Cloonmaan, he died in Cleaheen. The informant on his death record is a grandson named Thomas Morahan of Cleaheen. Perhaps Charles moved in with Thomas towards the end of his life.
