Thomas MORAGHAN (caution: relationship to brother John not verified)
(Abt 21 Dec 1820 - )
Thomas, who appears to have used the Moraghan spelling of his surname, may have been born in December 1820 as a baptism record has been located for a Thomas Moraghan, son of a Dominic Moraghan and Mary Killelea, who was baptised on 21 December 1820 in Killukin, Co. Roscommon. See my notes above for Thomas's father for my reason for thinking Dominic and Mary could be the parents of our Thomas. Several public family trees on the Ancestry website have Thomas's birth year and birth place as 1790 and Cleaheen, Tumna, Co. Roscommon. However, I have seen no evidence to support this. The same trees show his wife to have beeen Annie Wynne who was born around 1810 in Co. Sligo and died in 1870 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, but I have been unable to find proof of this.
Although Thomas is likely to have been born in the Roscommon/Leitrim area, his son James was born in King's County (Co. Offaly) and his son Pat in Co. Westmeath, which leads to to believe Thomas was not a farmer, at least not in the early 1850s, when James and Pat were born. The fact that both James and Pat were a soldier and militia sergeant respectively suggests that Thomas himself might also have been an army man, which would have involved postings around the country.
My husband, Joe Gordon, has been DNA-matched by Ancestry with both a descendant of Thomas's son James and a descendant of Thomas's son Pat; Joe's great-great-grandfather was John Morahan who farmed in Kiltoghert, Co. Leitrim. The type of match indicates that John and Thomas were very close relatives, perhaps even brothers, which is why have positioned Thomas as a brother of John's in the family tree. However I have no proof of such a connection - he may have been a first cousin, for example - so I have added a caution.
A descendant of Bridget Murphy (née Moraghan) of Farnaught (also spelled Farnagh), Co. Leitrim (1853-1885) has neen DNA-matched by Ancestry to one of the descendants of Thomas who has been matched with my husband, although this descendant of Bridget's does not himself appear to be a match with my husband. Bridget and her family are nevertheless worth noting. Bridget was a daughter of Darby Moraghan and married Brendan Murphy (1851-1893) of Kiltoghert, Co. Leitrim in 1873. Bridget and Bernard lived in Farnaught and had five children that we know of: John, Patrick, Mary Ann, Bernard and James, three of whom emigrated to the United States.
Finally, it is possible that Thomas was also related to brothers Owen and Roger Moraghan who were born in Cleaheen, Tumna, Co. Roscommon around the 1800s.
