Individual Details
John MORAHAN
(Abt 15 Aug 1838 - 22 Oct 1906)
John was a boat builder. During the 1870s he and his family appear to have been living in the townland of Cloonmaan in the parish of Tumna, Co. Roscommon, and at the time of the 1901 census they were living in the townland of Cortober in the parish of Killukin, Co. Roscommon, although a newspaper obituary for John (1906) tells he lived at Shannon View in Carrick-on-Shannon.
I am making an assumption that John was a brother of James Morahan another boat builder from the Carrick-on-Shannon area. This presumptive link is based on the fact that the father of both John and James was named Charles, both had Cortober connections and both were involved in the boat-making business. However I have no proof that they were in fact brother, which is why I have added a caution beside John's name. John and/or James may also have been related to the family of Bernard Morahan (born in the Carrick-on-Shannon area around the 1810s or 1820s), two of whose sons were coach builders.
There is an account on the Duchas website, www.duchas.ie, written as part of a 1930s school project on the history of Carrick-on-Shannon trades. Included is a brief description of the Morahan boat building business in the town:
"John Morahan and Sons, who lived on the Liberty, Carrick-on-Shannon were noted boat-builders. They turned out different kinds of boats including pleasuring-boats, turf-cotes etc. They made pleasuring boats for Lord Dudley, when Lord Lieutenant of Ireland." Mention is also made of the coach building business of the other Morahan family: "In the house now in possession of Mrs. Holt, wife of the late Mr. Holt, T. D. coach-building was carried on by a different family of Morahan." Note: This family of Morahans may have been the descendants of Bernard Morahan mentioned above.
