Harmon "Harmanus" Bresee

(21 Dec 1788 - 19 Apr 1859)

In the book by Dr. Bangs on the life of Dr. Phineas F. Bresee on page 291 Notes for Chapter 3 Item 15: "One of his sons (of Jeremiah) was Harmon Bresee, who operated a sawmill on the farm until it was washed out in a flood."

See Wilmer Bresee file. His wife is too young to marry. His study states that Harmon is the son of Jeremiah Bresee. See page 14 of "Handmaidens of the Lord" copywrited 1980 which is in the Wilmer Bresee file which is a word for word copy of the Wilmer E. Bresee study of 1935.

Phyllis Kinzie thinks Harmon is the son of John C. Bresee and Elisabeth Rossamn - see e-mail dated 22 Sept 07 in her file.

1830 census check Davenport, NY per Phyliss Kinzie.

1827 land records recorded on 5 Feb 1827 shows that John C. Bresee was a witness for a land sale by Harmanas and wife Polly Bresee and John (Johannes?) and wife Polly Bresee as sellers (Deed Book pages 89-90 film 557788). This may support the idea that Harmon was the son of John C. Bresee and not their grandson.

1818 IGI has Harmanus Bresee marring Polly Post (born abt 1797) abt 1818 in NY.

1813: in the book titled "Register of the General Society of the War of 1812. Washington, D.C.: The Society", dated 1972, 710 pgs., the author traces the ancestry of William Edgar Bresee back to his great grandfather, Harmon Bresee, born 21 Dec 1788, who married Polly Post 1813 in Davenport, Delaware, NY.

1812 per "Register of the General Society of the War of 1812" dated 1972 page 433 "Harmon Bresee was a Private in the company commanded by Capt. Abram Butts in the Regiment of N.Y. State Militia commanded by Col. Putnam Farrington. Then he volunteered at Kortright in the County of Delaware in N.Y. for six months."

1794 IGI has Harmanus Bresee born abt 1794, Davenport, Delaware Co., NY

1789 baptized as Hermanus Burzee in Great Barrington , Berkshire, MA per "Remarkable Records of Rev. Gideon Bostwick, 1770-1793 Great Barrington, MA" item #1858 as the son of John Burzee and Mary. Rev. Bostwick regularly used "Burzee" as the surname spelling and did not always use the accurate given name of the spouse per Bruce Davis posting dated 18 Mar 2008 on GenForum Re: Jeremiah Bresee, 1776-1826.

1788 birth date is from "Register of the General Society of the War of 1812" page 433. Birth location is in question since the town of Davenport was not formed until 1817 and per Rev. Bostwick record Harmon was baptized in Great Barrington, MA.
