Ann Titus
(4 May 1843 - 9 Apr 1906)
1928 death certificate for her daughter, Grace J. Bresee, showed her mother as Ann Titus.
1906 death date is from a family chart prepared by Grace Brown Bresee. California Death Index shows an Ann Johnson died 9 April 1906 in Los Angeles County #8356. Los Angeles County Vital Records Index of Deaths (film 1033298 Vol 8) shows her death as file #1191 Vol 5 filed 11 April 1906. Death date also shows in the William R. Arthurs study. LA Times obituary dated 10 April 1906 states that "In this city April 9, 1906 Mrs. Ann Johnson, age 63 years, mother of: Henry M. Johnson of San Diego; M.D. Johnson of Imperial; C.F. Johnson of Fresno; M.S. Johnson of Riverside; Mrs. J.E. Bradley of Riverside; Mrs. Ernest H, Bresee of Los Angeles. Funeral at Bresee Bros. 6th and Broadway, Interment at Rosedale Cemetery". Copy of her death certificate confirms the above, stating she lived in the state for 21 years.
1900 census shows her as age 57, born May 1843, a widow, living at 262 Date St., Riverside, Riverside Co., CA with her daughter, Jessie E. age 31, and her husband Edward Bradley age 38 plus their two children. Ann was born in New Hampshire as were her father and mother per this census. She was married for 32 years (her husband died in 1894 therefore married in 1862) and had 7 children with 6 now living. She could read, write and speak English.
1885-1886 Came to California by covered wagon (per family story told to me) to the city of Otay near the Mexican border after the Civil war. This is based on her husband's death certificate which showed he was in San Diego County for 8 years prior to his death in 1894. Her death certificate shows she lived in California for 21 years. She died 9 April 1906, therefore came to Califrnia in 1885. In the study "A Genealogical Guide to the Titus Family in North America" by William Arthurs, Anson Titus, brother to Ann Titus, and his wife, also lived in Otay after serving in the Civil War. The "History of the town of Stratford New Hampshire 1773-1925" by Jeannette R. Thompson page 401 also shows the family moving to California in the 80"s.
1880 census shows her as age 37 (born 1843) living with her husband John J. Johnson, age 47, in Brunswick, Essex Co., VT along with her children: Henry M. age 17, Jessie E. age 11, M. Durwood age 7, Charles F. age 5 and Grace age 3. This census also shows that her parents were born in New Hampshire.
1877 birth date for her daughter, Grace, is per Grace's death certificate which shows that Grace was born in Vermont on 11 July 1877 to John J. Johnson and Ann Titus. The city of birth, Brunswick, was determined by the 1870 and 1880 census.
1870 census shows her as age 27 (born 1843) living with her husband, John J. Johnson age 37, in Brunswick, Essex Co., VT, along with her children Henry age 7 and Jessie age 1, who were born in Vermont. She and her husband were born in New Hampshire. This conflicts with the 1880 census as to the birth location for the children Henry and Jessie. Also in the home was Eleazer Titus age 77 a retired carpenter who was born in New Hampshire and appears to be her father.
1869-1870 the family moved from New Hampshire to Vermont based on 1880 census showing the age of and place of birth for the children and that the child Jessie was born in April 1869 in New Hampshire. The 1870 census shows the family in Vermont. Per the "History of the town of Stratford New Hampshire 1773-1925" by Jeannette R. Thompson page 401, the family moved to Brunswick, VT and lived on her husband's grandfather (Caleb) Marshall's farm, now called the "Flanders Place".
1862 marriage date, location and by Rev. Judd is from a family chart prepared by Grace Brown Bresee. Marriage year confirmed by the 1900 census (see above). Marriage date and location also show in the Willima R. Arthurs study. Marriage date on hand written note from Elvira Titus Spencer (copy in the Ann Titus file). "The Titus Family in America" by Dorothy M. Titus dated July 1943, page 5. also confirms the marriage.
1860 census can not locate. The family was split up to various locations.
