Zeruiah (Zeniah) Harriman

Spelling of her name of "Zeniah" is from "A Memorial of the town of Hampstead, NH" pages 360-361 compiled by Harriette E. Noyes Vol. I copyrighted 1899 at the FHC and Vol. II dated 1903 found by Google. Her name is spelled "Zeruiah" in the below sited sources.

In the "History of the town of Stratford NH 1773-1925" by Jeannette Thompson, page 419-420: "Caleb Marshall, a cousin of Antipas, came from Hampstead, NH, to Northumberland, before the Revolutionary War. He settled on the farm below John Eames, and built his house without hammer or nails. After getting settled an alarm of Indians was given, and they buried their pewter dishes and put their knives and forks on a beam in the house, mounted a horses, and returned to their former home for a year or two. The young wife of Marshall, Zeniah, with one child of two years of age and an infant in her arms less than a month old, mounted a horse and fled to Hampstead, a distance of more than one hundred and fifty miles, arriving in safety (page 361 of "A Memorial of the town of Hampstead, NH" by Harriette E. Noyes Vol. II). Mr. Marshall died August 23, 1800, aged fifty years, and his wife Zeruiah (Harriman) Marshall, died Oct 15,1842, age eighty-nine." All of his childern and their wifes are from the same source. This story is also found in the History of Lancaster, NH as sited in "A Memorial of the town of Hampstead, NH" page 361 compiled by Harriette E. Noyes.

In the book "A memorial of the town of Hampstead, New Hampshire" Vol II by Harriette Eliza Noyes dated 1903, page 782: "IV. Zeniah, b Dec. 20, 1754; mar. Caleb, son of Capt. William Marshall of Hampstead, and soon after moved to Northumberland. Several forts were built in that section during the Revolutionary war. One of them was located on the farm of Caleb Marshall. The young wife of Marshall had her household goods hidden away, and with one child of two years of age and an infant in her arms less than a month old, mounted a horse and fled to Hampstead, a distance of more than one hundred and fifty miles, arriving in safety."

The child held by Zeruiah was Sarah per Sarah's husband article in the Vermont Gazetteer, Vol. 1, page 10258 on the town of Maidstone, VT.

Page 199 shows the 26 Aug. 1841, death of the wife of Caled Marshall, age 38.

1842 death date is from the "History of the town of Stratford NH 1773-1925" by Jeannette Thompson, page 420. She was age 89. Per the "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files Vol II" page 2196 by Virgil White the widow died on 15 Oct 1843.

1840 census, can not locate her in New Hampshire where she died in 1842.

1837 widow applied for pension at Northampton, NH, per the "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files Vol II" page 2196 by Virgil White.

1830 census for Northumberland, Coos Co., NH, shows a Widow Marshall age 70-80 (she would have been 77) living next door to a Caleb Marshall age 40-50 (this would have been her son).

1820 census for Northumberland, Coos Co., NH, shows a Caleb Marshall age 26-45 (this would have been Zeruiah's son) and his family plus a woman age 45 plus. This older woman would have been his widowed mother, Zeruiah.
