Caleb Marshall

(23 Aug 1750 - 23 Aug 1800)

In the "History of the town of Stratford NH 1773-1925" by Jeannette Thompson, page 419-420: "Caleb Marshall, a cousin of Antipas Marshall, came from Hampstead, NH, to Northumberland, before the Revolutionary War. He settled on the farm below John Eames, and built his house without hammer or nails. After getting settled an alarm of Indians was given, and they buried their pewter dishes and put their knives and forks on a beam in the house, mounted a horse, and returned to their former home for a year or two. Mr. Marshall died August 23, 1800, aged fifty years, and his wife Zeruiah (Harriman) Marshall, died Oct 15, 1842, age eighty-nine." Twelve of his children and their families were from the same informational source.

In the book "A memorial of the town of Hampstead, New Hampshire" Vol II by Harriette Eliza Noyes dated 1903, pages 361 & 782: Caleb Marshall was born 23 June 1750 in Hampstead, m Zurand or Zeniah Harriman and moved to Northumberland. Twelve of their children are listed on page 782.

In the "History of Coos Co., NH" page 545: the original grantees or proprietors nearly all lived in Portsmouth (NH) where their "propriety meetings" were held.

See "Vital Records of Hampstead, NH" compiled from the town's original record books, by Priscilla Hammond, dated 1938, found at the LDS film 15560, Item #2, pages 45-46, showing the marriage and children of William Marshall and Sarah Buswell.

Next door was a cousin, Antipas Marshall. 1800 death date is from the "History of the town of Stratford NH 1773-1925" by Jeannette Thompson, page 420, the "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files Vol II" page 2196 by Virgil White and his Revolutionary War Record on Heritage Quest.com. 1781 birth of son William is from the "History of the town of Stratford NH 1773-1925" by Jeannette R. Thompson, page 421 (LDS film 1321380 Item 1) but no location is mentioned. Birth location of Mass. for son William is from the 1880 census covering son William. From the death material on his daughter, Maria, shows him born in Hamstead, Mass. William's birth location may be explained by the fact the family was in Hamstead, Mass. during the time when the threat of Indians forced the family from Northumberland, NH, to their former home as mentioned at the top of this page. There is no Hamstead, Mass. and this may well be referring to Hampstead, NH.

1776 Caleb Marshall was named as part of Capt. Jeremiah Eames' Company and on 12 Oct. 1776 the Treasurer of the State of NH ordered members of the company be paid for time of service. See page 88 "History of Coos Co., NH" by Merrill" at Heritage Quest.com.

1771 on 25 Jan. 1771 he and a Will'm Marshall and others were original settlers of the town of Northumberland, NH, by order of the Govner of the Province of New Hampshire, appointed by King George 3th of Great Britain France and Ireland.
