Kalola

(Abt 1735 - Abt 1790)

LINEAGE
Fragment: She was granddaughter of Kalola and Kaopuiki was Ka-lani-kau-i-ka-alaneo Ke-opuolani (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 142).
LIFE
A. Tabu chiefess of Maui and Hawaii (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 206; Alexander, A Brief History of the Hawaiian People, p 117).
"It is said in the history, the chiefess was very sacred, very revered, and the birthright was closely linked with the burning kapu" (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 2 p 37).
B. She had only one child Kiwalao with Kalaniopuu (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 249).
C. After the death of Kalaniopuu, she took her daughter-in-law and infant granddaughter with her to live under the protection of Kahekili, first to Maui, then to Oahu. They returned to Maui in 1785 with Kalanikupule (Kahekili's son), and then fled to Molokai in 1790 when Kamehameha overran Kalanikupule on Maui (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 403). Due to Kalola's illness, the party did not go on to Oahu to join Kekuiapoiwa's brother (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 260).
Kamehameha followed her to Molokai, taking her 2 brothers to entreat her. But finding her deathly ill, he offered to take custody of her daughters and granddaughter, which Kalola agreed to upon her death.
D. Order of mates (Ahlo, Kamehameha's Children Today, p 38).
Conflict: Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 148 indicates that of her 2 daughters, Kekuiapoiwa was the older and Kalanikauiokikilo the younger. However, if Kamehamehanui (father of Kalani) was Kalola's first mate and Kalanikupuapaikalaninui (father of Kekuiapoiwa) was third mate, it does not make sense.
E. She was living in Honua'ula, Maui when the English ship Eleanor came to shore in February 1790. Her mate Kaopuiki stole the skiff attached behind the ship for its iron (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 149).
