Kamehamehanui
( - Abt 1765)
LIFE
A. Birth year ?
Conflict: Kamakau, Ka papa kuhikuhi makahiki o na mea Kaulana o Hawaii nei! indicates birth year as 1700.
B. Succeeded Kekaulike as ruler of Maui (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 136). When Kekaulike died suddenly, as he prepared for an invasion by Alapai, the land passed to Kamehamehanui, but because his mother was Alapai's sister, Alapai made peace with him and the other children of Kekuiapoiwa (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 70).
Conflict: Bingham, A Residence of Twenty-One Years in the Sandwich Islands, p 80 indicates he began his reign in 1772 but he died about 1765.
C. Alapainui, ruler of Hawaii, assisted him in retaining/securing his position (Kalakaua, The Legends and Myths of Hawaii, p 353). Kauhi had rebelled and sought to usurp authority, but Alapai came to his aid and put down the rebellion (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 73-74).
D. Contemporaries: When Kalaniopuu invaded Maui, Kamehamehanui gathered his forces, including allied chiefs from neighboring Molokai and Lanai. Molokai chiefs included Kaohele, Kaolohaka-a-keawe, Awili, Kumukoa, and Kapooloku [aka Kapoeloku]. Kaohele was brother to Kawau and Kaoenaia, chiefs of Kalaupapa; his sister was Kamai. Lanai chiefs were Namakeha, Kalaimanuia, and Kealiiaa (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 147; Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 80). Kalaniopuu made peace with Kamehamehanui and joined forces (Alexander, A Brief History of the Hawaiian People, p 101).
E. "After the war of Kapalipolipo, Kamehameha-nui remained ruling chief of Maui, and he ruled for twenty-nine years. He had many wives and children.... He was taken ill ... in Hana he ceded the lands and the ruling power to Kahekili, who became ruler of Maui.... He was a benevolent ruler and his government was peaceful; he did not war upon chiefs of other lands" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 82).
F. Conflict: Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 214 states Kamehamehanui had 2 mates. McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 1 p 14 lists 3. Two other pairings have been recorded from other sources.
G. Conflict: Kamakau, Ka papa kuhikuhi makahiki o na mea Kaulana o Hawaii nei! indicates death year as 1766.
