( - Abt 1808)

LINEAGE
Conflict: Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 366 lists mother as Kekukamano.
Conflict: Cartwright, The Genealogy of the Kamehameha Dynasty, p 20 lists parents as Keoua and Kalola, which would make this true: Younger sister of Kekuiapoiwa Liliha (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 430).
LIFE
A. Tabu chiefess of Maui (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 430). "The highest tabu chiefess of her time" (Cartwright, The Genealogy of the Kamehameha Dynasty, p 20)
B. Paired with Kamehameha about 1790. She had no children with him (Ahlo et al, Kamehameha's Children today, p 4).
C. Died about 1809 by taking poison (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 197). "The gossip was that she and Keku'iapoiwa Liliha did not get along" (Ahlo et al, Kamehameha's Children Today, p 57). "She died by suicide because of shame at the frequent jibes from Liliha about 'homeless chiefs, who dwell under my protection and that of my kaikunane, Kamehameha, whose kingdom this is. They destroyed our child, these captives whom we brought here from Iao.' Liliha spoke thus, because Kalaniakua was pregnant by Kamehameha and the child died in her womb" (Ii, Fragments of Hawaiian History, p 99). "She was called Kalaniakua and likened to a god; all the chiefs and people prostrated themselves before her... She did not like Kamehameha, thought him of inferior birth and did not want her niece to sleep with him. It is said that this is why she took the Kalaipahoa poison and died at Honuakaha in 1808" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 260).
