Oscar B. Olson

Oscar Bernhard Olson, son of Peter and Inga Olson, was born January 11, 1894, at home in Hendricks Township, Hendricks, Minnesota. He moved with his parents in 1897 to the Toronto, South Dakota area. He attended Rural schools near Toronto, South Dakota.
Oscar was drafted into the army September 18, 1917. He served during WWI in France in the battles of A.E.F. Ypres Front 8-19 to 9-1 1918. Bellicourt 9-29 to Busigny 10-8 to 10-11, 1918 and Rivervilla Mazinghem 10-17 to 10-18-1918. Oscar arrived back in the U.S.A. on April 2, 1919 and was discharged from the army April 12, 1919.
On November 11, 1929, he was united in marriage to Stella Sorenson of Toronto, South Dakota. They farmed near Toronto. In 1940 they purchased a farm near Lake Cochrane, Gary, South Dakota, farming with his brother Lawrence Olson. Oscar farmed actively until he was 80 years old. He was an active member of East Highland Lutheran Church, rural Brandt, South Dakota, serving on the council. He was chairman of Rural Spring Dell School District No. 36 for 18 years. They retired and moved to Hendricks, Minnesota in 1979. Oscar lived alone in his apartment for three years after his wife passed away in 1987. He was sick for five days and passed away at 96 years, 2 months and 7 days.
He is survived by three children: Shirley Benz of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Carol Resmen of Brandt, South Dakota and Peter B. Olson of Snohomish, Washington; seven grandchildren.
Oscar was preceded in death by his wife, Stella; parents; three brothers: Lawrence, Palmer and Gust, two sisters; Gena Gravning and Florence Olson; one nephew and one niece.
