Gena Bertine Gravning
Mrs Gena Bertine Gravning, 86 passed away in a Watertown, South Dakota Hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Gravning was born to Peter F. and Inga (Paulson) Olson at Lincoln County, Hendricks, Minnesota. She came to South Dakota in 1897 with her parents. Gena lived in the Toronto, South Dakota area the rest of her life.
Gena was united in marriage to Olaf Quickstad. To this union a daughter, Arvilla was born in 1919. Olaf passed away in 1936 and Arvilla passed away in 1943.
She married Julius Gravining on November 19, 1941. He passed away in 1944. She married Joseph Gravning on December 5, 1945 at Clark, South Dakota. Gena and Joe spent many winters down south.
She was a member of the auxiliary of the Erickson-Olson Post #81 of the American Legion. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of Leganger Lutheran Church, Toronto, South Dakota.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph of Toronto; three brothers, Lawrence Olson, Toronto, South Dakota, Oscar B. Olson, Hendricks, Minnesota and Palmer Olson, Ellsworth, Minnesota; two nephews; Ross Olson and Peter Olson and two nieces. Shirley Benz and Carol Resmen.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, April 25,1979 at 11:00 A.M. at the Leganger Lutheran Church with Rev. Harold Baily officiating. Musical selections were provided by Lois Quam with Mrs. Alice Moore as organist. The congregation sang "What a Friend We Have In Jesus". Casket bearers were Alton Nelson, Clifford Falken, Wallace Nelson, Leon Stroschein, Lewis Lunden, James Resmen and C. A. Martinson. Burial was in the Toronto Cemetery.
Engs Funeral Home of Clear Lake and Toronto was in charge of the arrangements.
Gena having no family of her own really enjoyed her two nephews and two nieces. She would do special things for them like baking these special bars:
Aunt Gena's Date Bars
Cut up: 1 cup dates
Pour over: 1 cup boiling water Let cool
Add: 1 tsp soda
Cream: 1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
Add: 2 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
Then: date mixture
1 3/4 cup flour
salt
Pour into a large cake pan and sprinkle 6 oz chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts over the top.
Bake @ 350 for 35-40 mlnutes.
