Obituary from Hendricks Pioneer - August 1948

With Rev. M. A. Ericksen officiating, funeral services were held on Thursday, August 12, for a long time resident of the community, Gust Nygaard, to whom death had come on August 9 at the age of 72 years, eight months and 20 days. Rev. Ericksen was in charge of the services at the home and at the Lutheran Free Church. Musical numbers consisted of a vocal solo by Mrs. M. A. Ericksen at the home, and of three numbers by the choir at the church. Pallbearers were Even and Martin Lovro, Bennie Hindbjorgen, Orville Berge, Noren Morseth, and Gilbert Eggen. Interment was in the East Cemetery. Gustav M. Nygaard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Nygaard, was born in Allemakee County, Iowa, on November 19, 1875. The following year he came with his parents to Lincoln county where they took a homestead. He was among the early confirmands of the Calvary Lutheran Church under Rev. Solensten in 1891. On April 5, 1897, he was united in marriage to Petra Fjeseth. About a year and a half later they moved to the farm adjoining the homestead. This was their family farm and they lived there until their death. They were the parents of eight children. The deceased had been in good health his entire lifetime until about six months ago when he was taken ill. In addition to Mrs. Nygaard he is survived by eight children: Marvin and Oscar of Minneapolis, Ingvald of Rochester, Gehard of Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Clarence Kvernmo, Elmer, Clarence and Alma all of Hendricks. Other survivors are six grandchildren, one brother Carl of Hendricks and two sisters, Mrs. Peterson of Canada, and Mrs. Anna Olson of Canby. Those from a distance who came for the services included: Mr. and Mrs. Iver Digre of Huron, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Olai Ronning, Mrs. Anna Oien, Mrs. Emil Lovro, Mrs. Mervin Hey and Janet, and Martin Lovro, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mrs. Anna Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Aasen of Canby; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Nygaard, George Brandinger, and Mrs. Paul Mathison of Minneapolis; Mrs. Donald Ruddy of Los Angeles, California.

Rembrances of Grandpa Gustav Nygaard by Lorenchia Nygaard Scott, granddaughter

Grandpa liked to have his grandchildren come to see him. He was not the hugging type but he did not mind being hugged tightly by his grandchildren. I remember seeing all the law books and a very large medical book that Grandpa must have read and used. He was a reader and a thinker and as he was thinking he would whistle very softly. We grandchildren knew that he was deep in thought and he was not to be bothered. He liked to keep up with the news with the radio and with the newspaper. When I was young and went to church with Grandpa and Grandma, the men sat on one side of the nave and the women on the opposite side. As a child, I did not like this as it made me feel isolated from my grandfather. Grandpa could figure out how to fix almost anything. He had his own little tool shed and we would peer in the door to watch grandpa repair something.
