2 On 1 Oct 1702, William Owen purchased 100 acres of land in Goochland Co, VA from Lath/Seath France for one hundred pounds of merchantable tobacco.The land was located on the south side of Chickahominy Swamp.He held this land one year and sold it to John Woodson for 1500 pounds of tobacco and 8 Pounds Sterling.For those uninitiated into the mystique of this particular area, it should be noted that today the Swamp, and, indeed, Chickahominy River itself, arehighly infested with the dread Water Moccasin.

WILLIAM OWEN
William was born in the early 1670s in Prince George Co VA and died in Halifax Co VA 8n 1753 - the same year that Halifax Co was formed from part of Prince George Co.Note that with the shift in these county lines, as in so many other cases, William may not have moved.The son of Bartholomew and Joanna Owen, William married Alsoe (surname unknown) who was born abt 1682 and died before 1753.
On 1 Oct 1702, William Owen purchased 100 acres of land in Goochland Co, VA from Lath/Seath France for one hundred pounds of merchantable tobacco.The land was located on the south side of Chickahominy Swamp.He held this land one year and sold it to John Woodson for 1500 pounds of tobacco and 8 Pounds Sterling.For those uninitiated into the mystique of this particular area, it should be noted that today the Swamp, and, indeed, Chickahominy River itself, are highly infested with the dread Water Moccasin.
William and Alsoe had at least one child - a daughter named for his mother, Joanna.Joanna was born 3 Jan 1714 and died in 1795;She married John Kirby, Sr., son of Robert Kerby and his second wife, Katherine (known as) Tomkins. Joanna Owen was John Kirby's second wife; together they had eight children - see THE KIRBY FAMILY.
Joanna's name has come down through the generations of Kirbys.Among the latest who have carried the name was Joanna Kirby Davis, the mother of Lucile Davis Shuler, Uncle George Lindsey Shuler's wife.We therefore have a double connection to the Kirby family - one through Nancy Kirby, daughter of Jesse and Sophia Choice Kirby and another through Joanna Kirby Davis' line from Jesse and Sophia through Isaiah and Solomon Sharp.
When William, Joanna's father, died, he named his son-in-law, John Kirby and his eldest son Francis Kerby as Executors of the estate.However when the will was presented at Halifax County Court on 20 Mar 1753, a John Owen, claiming to be a son and heir at law, represented by Thomas Nash, Gent., his atty, enterd a caveat and the case was continued to next courst.Apparently the matter was settled as the will of William Owen, deceased, was present to the court on 15 May 1753 by John Kerby and Francis Kerby, executors, and proved by William Mullins, Jacob Adkins, and Joseph Keaton, with no mention of a son named John.
