Bartholomew Owen

(24 Aug 1619 - Bef 31 Jan 1677)

== Biography ==
Bartholomew Owen was born in Steventon Parish, Berkshire, England, ca. 1619, and was christened on 24 August 1619.
His parents were Robert Owen, born in Steventon Parish ca. 1583, christened 7 November 1583, and Joanne White, born in Steventon Parish ca. 1592, christened 20 July 1592.
His first wife was Ann Charles, married 9 May 1641 in England. There are no known children, nor is there evidence of her birth/death dates/locations.
The earliest record of [http://kinnexions.com/smlawson/owens.htm Bartholomew Owen] in America is 1658, but the related Court records in Surry County, Virginia from 1658 to late 1660 indicate he was probably well established as he had some sort of dispute with Thomas Gray, an early Planter. The Court found that Bartholomew was guilty of scandalous and defamatory language in the case (more below).
Despite this verdict, Bartholomew was apparently considered a man of some substance since he was referred to as a gentleman in the records. On Oct. 17, 1659, Bartholomew served on an Inquest Jury in an accidental death. He was a Church Warden of Southwark Parish in 1661. In a land sale of 1 Mar 1661 and cattle sale of 1 Apr 1662, Bartholomew was called Gentleman. On Nov. 3, 1663, Bartholomew lost a suit and forfeited 2129 pounds of tobacco, and in 1664 he was co-surety on a King's bond of 10,000 pounds of tobacco. These and other land and Court records between 1658 and 1670 indicate that Bartholomew Owen held considerable wealth in land and commodities and was called upon to serve the community in positions of trust and responsibility.
Bartholomew's earliest known land transaction was an Indenture, dated 1 March 1661. Christopher Lewis and wife, Jane, sold 200 acres to Bartholomew. The land was located the upper part of the West side of Grayes Creeke, commonly known by the name of the Great Levell and Runaway Neck, bounded by the land of Jno. Watkins.
Bartholomew married Joanna [surname unknown] possibly about 1663 or 1666. His wife is named as Joanna in a conveyance dated Jan. 3, 1670, and in the Sep. 9, 1674 sale of 150 acres in Surry Co., Virginia to William Foreman. There are unsourced indications that Joanna was born about 1652; died after 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia; or born ca. 1640 and died after 1693. Many undocumented trees claim she is daughter of Edmund Jennings, who was a neighbor of Bartholomew. There are four known children: Katherine (ca.1667-1719), Robert (ca. 1668-1717), William (ca. 1671-1752) and Thomas (ca. 1673-1744).
A 648 acre land patent by Bartholomew on 14 May 1673, and a 1689 patent by Edmund JENNINGS including headrights for Robert OWEN, Jone OWEN and William OWEN, together with the absence of Bartholomew from Court records from early 1670 to mid 1673, suggests that the family may have made a trip to England during this time.
Bartholomew granted a power of attorney to Nicholas Meriweather on Oct. 8, 1677. At the time of his death, Bartholomew owned a 648-acre plantation. He died intestate ca. 1677. On 31 Jan 1677/8, Jone [Joanna] Owen was granted administration of the estate. The estate was inventoried and appraised at 30 pounds on 14 Feb 1677 in Surrey County, Virginia.
After Bartholomew's death, Johanna married Thomas Brooks, and moved with her two younger sons, William and Thomas, to James City, Virginia and then to Henrico County.

Will Foreman and John Moring made the appraisal on 14 February 1677, Jone Owen also signed by mark."

=== Court Records ===
Bartholomew Owens was involved in several court proceedings, as recorded in the Surry County, Virginia 1652 - 1663 court records:
* In 1658 he was involved in a fight with Thomas Gray, a prominent planter. A Suit was filed in Surrey County and several witnesses testified that they had heard Bartholomew Owen making many "disparaging, malicious and threatening remarks" against Gray. On 29 January 1658, the Court granted a continuance in the difference between Gray and Owen. On 5 September 1660, in Court held at Southwarke Parish for Surrey County, further evidence was introduced in the case.
* In a deposition, dated 16 August 1660, Robert Spenser, aged 30, son of Edmund Spencer, undersheriff of Surrey County, stated that he had heard Bartholomew, on several occasions and in various places speak very "scandulous" words against the Commissioners of Surrey County, saying he would never have justice done him in that Court."
* Further, both in James City and in Surrey County, Bartholomew had highly reviled Captain George Jordan, calling him "Raskell and Rogue" and "shouten Raskell" and several other such base terms. Spenser rebuked Owen for his "mullitious" words. Owen replied, swearing, "God Damm him, of that raskell" George Jordan. In the second deposition in James City, 19 August 1660, Roger Rawlins, aged 26, said that he heard Owen "disparrage" Captain Jordan and the Court, threatening him "publicky" in company saying "he longed to kick that man's arse."
* In September 1660, Mrs. Fortune Mills, a relative of the reviled Captain George Jordan, "deposeth" that Bartholomew Owen of Surrey County, hath several times, in her hearing, spoken "dispairaging and scandalous" words against the Commissioners and wholly against Captain Jordan saying "he never had justice done him in that Court." The court found Bartholomew guilty of scandalous and defamatory language and appointed Captain George Jordan to sue and prosecute the said Owen at the next Quarter Court with full power and authority to use all lawful means, for their consideration. Robert Stanton, the court clerk recorded this judgement, on 10 September 1660.

== Biography ==
Bartholomew's parents and exact date/place of birth are unknown. He is often confused with another [[Owen-9057|Bartholomew Owen]] whose parents and birth details are known but these are two entirely different men.
These and other land and Court records between 1658 and 1670 indicate that Bartholomew Owen held considerable wealth in land and commodities and was called upon to serve the community in positions of trust and responsibility.

Note: Sir Edmund Jennings never set foot in America. His son, Edmund Jennings, Esquire, arrived in Virginia AFTER Bartholomew died and never lived anywhere near Bartholomew's old plantation. DNA and documentary evidence prove Joanna was not related to Edmund Jennings.

Bartholomew & Joanna had four (and only four) known children: Katherine (ca.1667-1719), Robert (ca.

'''Note: The main source for this myth appears to be U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index,1500's-1900's , online at Ancestry.com, which shows a Bartholomew Owen arrived 1673 in Virginia. Coupled with the fact that Bartholomew's name does not appear in court or land records for two and one-half years prior to this March,1673 land patent, some researchers have speculated that he must have made a return visit to the British Isles and then sailed back to his home in Virginia in 1673.'''
'''The problem in using this source for arrival information is that not everyone on the list was a passenger on a ship arriving at the place and year indicated. Ancestry.com tells us that some of the entries came from actual passenger lists while others came from land patent records. In fact, Bartholomew's 1673 record at Ancestry has the following annotation: "Date and place where land was patented…". This source ONLY proves that Bartholomew's name appeared on a Virginia land patent dated 1673. It does NOT prove that he arrived aboard a ship in 1673. There is absolutely no credible evidence that Bartholomew ever left His plantation Surry County, Virginia. And there is considerable evidence that his widow and children remained at the plantation for at least 12 years after Bartholomew died. Therefore, speculation that he and/or his family made a return visit to the British Isles is based upon a false premise.'''

===Birth===It’s only a myth that the Bartholomew born 1619 in Berkshire, England to parents Robert Owen and Joane White, later immigrated to Virginia.Entered by Virgil Owens Owens-3992 13 Nov 2019
This information appears to have come from England, Select Births and Christenings,1538-1975, online at Ancestry. com and at Family Search.org. The collection includes information gathered from English church records and the International Genealogical Index (a computer file created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
The main problem with using the information from this source is that there is no way to determine that the male child Baptized as Bartholomew Owen in Steventon, Berkshire, England is the same person as the adult Bartholomew Owen who later settled in Virginia. In fact, the odds are strongly against it.
About 40 years ago, Mary Sue Mathys hired J. Dennis Burton, a professional genealogist in England to research Bartholomew’s supposed English roots. As reported in her book, Mr. Burton was unable to find any evidence for Bartholomew’s English roots and also unable to find any evidence that the Bartholomew Owen who married Ann Charles 1641 in Surrey County, England was the same man who settled in Surry County, Virginia. Mrs. Mathys emphatically stated (in all caps) “THIS INFORMATION HAS NOT BEEN PROVED AS BEING THE FAMILY OF BARTHOLOMEW OWEN OF SURRY CO., VA.”Mathys, Mary Sue; Owen Connections: The family of Bartholomew and Joanna Owen, emigrants to Surry County, Virginia; published 1984; Out of print and unavailable at Amazon but copies exist in several libraries around the country.
Given the frequency of the given name Bartholomew and the frequency of the surname Owen, we can statistically predict that there easily could have been a dozen or more children born in England and Wales in the early 1600's, all having the same name of Bartholomew Owen. Therefore, there's only about 1 chance in 12 that this birth record is for our Bartholomew. Records can be found for the following men named Bartholomew Owen:
1. Bartholomew Owen, baptized 24 Aug 1619 in Steventon, Berkshire, England
2. Bartholomew Owen, baptized 2 Nov 1628 in Conway Parish, Caernarvonshire, Wales, son of William Owen & Jane Lee.
3. Bartholomew Owen, born 1640 in London, son of Colonel Thomas Owen
4. Bartholomew Owen, married Anne Charles 9 May 1641 in London. (probably same as #1)
5. Bartholomew Owen, son of Dr. Richard Owen, vicar of Eldtham Church in London
6. Bartholomew Owen married Helen Skeymer 8 Jan1623 at St. Benet, Paul’s Wharf in London.
Without further documentation, it is folly to randomly point to the baptism record of one of them and say "Oh yeah, this is clearly our ancestor who wound up in Virginia."
DNA evidence also argues against Robert Owen and Joane White as the parents of the Bartholomew Owen who settled in Virginia. In addition to my own DNA, I have full access to the AncestryDNA matches of nine other descendants of the Bartholomew Owen from Virginia. Together, we have autosomal DNA matches to more than 200 (I quit counting) other descendants of Bartholomew.Statistical analysis of autosomal DNA match results (>200 matches) for Barbara Harrington, Billy Ray Owens, Carol Paladin, Carol Staffieri, Cora May Thomas, Delores Domingo Roberts, Dennis Pierce, Ronald Owens, and Virgil Owens, all proven descendants of Bartholomew & Joanna’s son, William. Greater than 99.9% confidence that Bartholomew & Joanna are our ancestors. Email askVirgil@aol.com for methodology and result details. However, we have ZERO matches to anyone who is a descendant of a relative of Robert Owen or Joane White.
Furthermore, we have a number of DNA matches to descendants of Owen families living in Merionethshire, Wales in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth century. Although we can't find documentary evidence linking our Bartholomew with these families and their locations, the DNA evidence strongly suggests that Bartholomew's (and our) Owen roots are in north Wales. Conversely, DNA evidence that would show our Owen roots in Berkshire (or anywhere else) in England is lacking.
And then there's his marriage to Joanna, reportedly in 1666-which seems about right considering when their children were born. From court records, we know that Joanna was born about 1650 to 1652.Henrico County Deeds and Wills, 1688-97, page 486 If Bartholomew was really born in 1619, then it would have been a 47 year-old-man marrying a 14 to 16-year-old girl. Yeah, we all know men tend to prefer younger wives but not THAT much younger. Statistically, less than 1/2 of one percent of all men will marry a woman more than 30 years younger than themselves. Could have happened but the statistical probability is 0.005 where 1 = certain and 0 = impossible.
Consider also his words and actions during his court cases in the late 1650's and early 1660's. Source: Surry County Records, Book I, 1652-1672, page 166 He threatened law enforcement and even shouted insults against the very court that would decide his case. These are the words and actions of an immature, impetuous youth with raging high levels of testosterone-not the actions of a mature man in his 40’s, which he would have been had he been born in 1619. Just a few years later, he quit acting with such bluster and bravado. An indication that he finally grew up?
The earliest record that can definitely be tied to Bartholomew Owen of Surry County, Virginia is a 29 Jan 1658 court record where he is being sued.Surry County Records, Book I, 1652-1672, page 30; online at Ancestry.com Since you had to be 21 years of age to be sued, we can only say for sure that he must have been born about 1637 or earlier.
