They appeared in Lincoln County, Tennessee in the 1820 U.S. Census and remained there until after 1831. In January 1826 Wiley Wingo and Henry Kimes were appointed by the Lincoln County court to oversee parts of a public road. By October, 1833 Wiley had moved his family to Giles County, Tennessee and by January 1843 he was in Dallas County, Missouri. His first Federal land was in 1857.

Although the majority of the Wingo family sided with the Confederacy five of Wiley's sons joined the Union forces including William C. who was killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas on March 7, 1862. Benjamin F., Francis S., and Jasper saw considerable action while taking part in the Battles of Prairie Grove, Arkansas and Brownsville and many minor engagements, and Jackson who died while in the army on Feburary 1, 1863 at Fayetteville, Arkansas.
