Christian BROENNIMANN
(12 Dec 1812 - 1 Sep 1874)
Christian Broennimann was born in Switzerland, one of six children of Christian and Anna Guggisburg Broennimann. He and Barbara emigrated to America in 1852 with eleven children. It is believed that the next to the youngest, Arnold, may have been born on the trip across the ocean. They resided in Fry's Valley, Tuscarawas Co, Ohio for three years before moving on to Iowa. The family was able to travel as far as Iowa City, Iowa, by railroad, but then boarded the stage coach for the remainder of the trip.
It is believed the Broennimann family came from an area about 4 miles from Bern, Switzerland. At the time they left Switzerland, spelling of their last name was Broennimann, but it began to change with land records in Ohio (Breneman), and eventually stayed Breniman.
The Broennimann family, having arrived in Iowa, established their home about four miles southeast of Brooklyn,Ia.,where the father engaged in general farming. His sons all engaged in farming as well, and at one time they were all located on farms in this area southeast of Brooklyn, owning about 2500 acres of land known as the "Breniman Settlement".
Christian passed away on the old homestead in 1874 at the age of 62 years. He and his wife are buried in the Moravian Cemetery, now known as the Harmony Cemetery, which was deeded to the Moravian Society by Christian D. Breniman, and is located on a one acre piece of land on a knoll on the Breniman land. He died without leaving a will. His son, Christian D., was executor of his estate.
The Brenimans were members of the Moravian Church which they were instrumental in establishing, being the largest contributors to its building fund. This church was built by the Brenniman family in Warren Township and was the first country church built in the county, being erected in 1869.
Pat Breniman Rowell has in her possession a photo of 9 of the Breniman children as adults.
