Larkin Emmett Cantrell
(Abt, 1826 - October 29, 1860)
"Larkin Cantrell was born in 1826, probably at Cantrell Cross Roads, McMinn County, Tennessee. He was a witness to the will of William Henry Cooke, executed October 1, 1848. Mr. Cooke died October 9, 1960. His wife, Mary Cantrell Cooke, was a sister of Gabriel Cantrell and an aunt of Larkin Emmett. Administrators of the estate of Gabriel Cantrell were A. C. Carlock and Larkin Emmett Cantrell. An inventory of the estate was submitted to the Judge of the Probate Court of McMinn County, January 7, 1850. Larkin Emmett married Sarah Ann Firestone, January 12 1852. She was the daughter of Samuel Firestone of McMinn County. Larkin Emmett purchased his mother's and five brothers' shares of his father's estate. The older brothers that sold their interest in the estate were William J., Thomas H., James R., Robert Tate and Alexander M. Larkin Emmett did not purchase the following younger children's shares of their father's estate: Felix Gabriel, Mary Ann Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, Hezekiah C., David Benjamin and Joseph Pealin. Larkin Emmett owned half interest in the family farm, and his share was valued at $8,000 in 1859. He owned other property worth $6,000. Larkin Emmett was elected Sheriff and Jailor of McMinn County in 1859. He moved from the family farm to Athens after he was elected Sheriff of the county.
"The U. S. census of McMinn County, Tennessee was taken July 30, 1860. The following were enumerated on Larkin Emmett's household: Larkin Emmitt age 33, Sarah Ann age 29, Robert Pierce age 7, John David age 6, Mary Texanna age 4, Thomas Washington age 2 and Lemaster Emmett born after the death of his father. Mary Jeanette Cantrell Mohlis, the oldest daughter of Lemaster Emmett Cantrell, stated that her grandfather, Larkin Emmett Cantrell, died October 29, 1860 after attempting to lift a wagon partially loaded with railroad ties. The will of Larkin Emmett was submitted to the Judge of the Probate Court of McMinn County, Tennessee in November 1860. Sarah Ann and her uncle Joseph Lattimore were appointed administrators of the will. Wording of the will required the executors to bring suit for partition of land of the deceased father, Gabriel Cantrell. Nancy and all the rest of her children were living in Missouri at that time. Larkin Emmett's will stipulated that about three acres around Gabriel Cantrell's grave be left for the family burying ground. The early settlers in the area frequently designated a family burying ground on their farm. In later years, a cemetery was established for the community. After the death of Larkin Emmett Cantrell, October 29, 1860, William Burk was appointed Sheriff of McMinn County, November 5, 1860 to serve the unexpired term of the deceased sheriff. After the death of her husband, Sarah Ann Cantrell found providing an existence for her children was difficult. Sometime after settlement of the suit for partition of land of the deceased Gabriel Cantrell estate in 1867, and final settlement of Larkin Emmett Cantrell estate, Sarah Ann moved to Missouri. She and her children lived for a while in the home of her mother-in-law, Nancy Cantrell, who had settled on Cantrell Creek, Webster County, Missouri in 1855. Sarah Ann died October 29, 1890 in Webster County, Missouri, and she was buried in the Old Prospect Methodist." (CANTRELL - CANTRILL by Horace Elbert Cantrell, 1972, pages 188 - 188a.)
