Aquilla Greer

"Aquilla Greer, the fifth son of William and Ann (Fitch) Greer, was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, and is assumed to have gone to Virginia as his brothers did. His name appears in Wythe County, Virginia, as follows: "Aquilla Greer, bought from Governor James Wood, 78 acres of land on Wilson Creek, waters of New River, adjoining Solomon Cox, in Wythe County, Virginia; issued December 21, 1782; surveyed January 23, 1793; granted March 9, 1797. (COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA LAND PATENTS, L.O.T., WT. #10003, Book 27, folio 183." The fact that this Aquilla Greer had an uncle, Aquilla Greer, born 1716, who was living during much of the same period, makes it difficult to seggregate their records. The Uncle died in 1794. It was first thought this Aquilla Greer was the ancestor of the Harford County, Maryland branch, but his dates do not seem to permit this. Personal contacts made with members of the Harford County, Maryland branch clearly indicate their ancestor was a William Greer, who married Sarah Freeland. At present, nothing further concerning this Aquilla Greer." (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Lois Temple FGS 955 lists no known wives in her notes; nor does Torrence. In GREERS THAT GOT TO GEORGIA (1987) by Julian Greer, it is shown that Aquilla Greer's first wife was Eliz. Bandy and his second wife was Polly Fielder, who was from Franklin County, Virginia. This Eliz. Bandy and Elizabeth Bandy, wife of Aquilla Greer, Jr., first cousin of this Aquilla Greer, may possibly be mixed up, but I am not sure what is correct and both may be correct. They both could have married Elizabeth Bandy, though doubtful. However, for these records and at this time, I have not included any wives for this Aquilla Greer.)
