"James Greer, was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, circa 1733; removed to Virginia, where his name appears in Bedford County, as owning 290 acres, surveyed April 6, 1772; granted July 20, 1780, as shown in COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA LAND PATENTS BY THE ROYAL GOVERNMENT. 1623/1774, by Nell M. Nugent, Book E, folio 91. (This land was located on the Staunton River.)
"His will is recorded in the Rocky Mount Court House, Franklin County, as of 1806, wherein he left to his son, Charles, 276 acres; to his son, James, 156 acres and to his wife, Ellender Greer, the balance of estate, naming her executrix. In St. John's Parish Records, Joppa, Maryland, page 231: "James Greer married Eliner Hughes, March 24, 1768." No proof that they are the same." (GREER FAMILY: ORIGINATING IN MARYLAND by Robert M. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: From the records of Billie Redding Lewis, it appears that this James Greer, son of William Greer (if William did have a son named James), did live in Bedford County, but has been confused with the James whose will was made in Franklin County in 1806. Franklin County came out of Bedford County in 1785. The James who died in 1806 was the son of Moses and Mary (Bailey) Greer, Moses being the son of John and Sarah (Day) Greer. This confusion seems to have came about through an error in Torrence's writings, who passed the information on the Edna (Greer) Porter Hatfield, who passed it on the Ellen (Greer) Rees. The information attributed, by most past researchers, to this James Greer, will be found under James Greer (who married Eliner Hughes), son of Moses Greer, as presented by Billie Lewis in ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE. I am not sure which James owned this 290 acres in Bedford County, but it appears the information and will presented above belong to James, son of Moses Greer.)
