"Andrew J. Greer was born about 1818 in Carter County (part of which later became Johnson County), Tennessee. He was listed in the 1850 census for Johnson County, Tennessee and in the 1860 census for Hancock County, Tennessee. His wife and children were listed on teh 1870 census for Hancock County, but he wasn't so he apparently died before then. ON the roster for the 29th CSA Infantry, Company D, is listed "Andrew J. Greer: Enl. Feb. 12, 1863, Sneedville, 3 years; died in hospital at Rome, Georgia May 27 1863, chronic diarreha." He was married to Mary "Polly" Spears (or Speers), who was born about 1825 in Virginia. She was the daughter of James O. and Elizabeth Shoun Spears and the granddaughter of Leonard and Barbara Slemp Shoun. In the will of Thomas Owen, dated 6 March 1822, "... first I give and devise to my grandsons John Greer and Andrew J. Greer all my tract or parcel of land whereon I now live ... John is to have fifty acres .. and Andrew J. Greer is to have the thirty acres adjoining the same ... ."
