James Oscar Albert Martin
(December 26, 1886 - July 5, 1939)
"Albert's family moved from Missouri to Texas when he was two years old. Albert was a red headed, adventurous young man and, before he married, had a mischievous nature. One Sunday night, the story is told, when all the family was at church he and two other young men got on their horses and started racing. One of the boys shot a pistol in the air and nobody said it was Albert that shot the gun but it was his pistol that did the shooting. All the boys were fined by the lawman and Albert's dad made him sell his pistol to pay the fine.
"At age 18 Albert married Laura Jane McCann, the daughter of James Franklin McCann and Elisa Foster. They were married by A. W. Cunningham, Justice of the Peace of Montague County, Texas. Laura was born 22 January 1885 in, it is assumed, Texas. Her father was born in Mississippi and her mother born in Texas and probably that is where Mr. McCann met Miss Foster.
"For many years Albert farmed in Montague County, Texas. He didn't own land and moved from place to place, job to job, trying to support his family. They were constantly on the move. He farmed at Starkey, Saint Jo and Nocona in Texas but was in Hollis, Oklahoma when their first child was born. He was also a horse trader and a good one, going one week end a month into town to buy, sell or trade horses. Shortly before his mother died in 1925, he leased a farm near Chickasha, Oklahoma where he and his family remained for about a year. Later they moved to Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas where he operated corrals to house the horses of the farmers when they came into town.
"Albert, evidently was born with an urge to roam and he had a difficult time staying put. About 1928, he left his family in Wellington and moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to live with his uncle Tom Martin.
"He worked first as a deputy and later served one term as Justice of the Peace. Because of ill health he was unable to run for the second term and died shortly thereafter of a cerebral hemorrhage. Albert lived at 2313 Brock Street in Oklahoma City when he died. He was 52 years old. His funeral was held on Friday morning, 7 July 1939, at the Memory Chapel of the Hunter Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in that city. Laura McCann Martin died 30 July 1975 of congestive heart failure in Huntington Beach, California. She was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Huntington Beach, California."
