Edna Jane Martin

(March 26, 1895 - May 20, 1922)

"Edna Martin, youngest child of Bill and Cumi Martin was born near Bonita, Montague county, Texas. She was the only one of their children to be born after their move from Missouri.

"Edna grew up in Red Bud area, near Bonita. She attended the Long Branch school that was about a mile and a half from her home. Of course, she walked as did all the other students who attended. She was taught the three "R's," reading, riting and rithmetic in a one room school house. Compared to the way we live today her life was not easy. She lived on 80 acres with her parents and there was always chores to do. She helped with the milking, churning and kitchen chores as well as the routine housework. Television had not been invented and there was not even a radio to listen to. The short evenings were spent reading, by lamp light, or listening to her mother tell family stories or her father read the Bible.

"On the 25 August 1912 Edna married William Virgil Combs. She was 17 years old and he was 20. Virgil was the son of John L. Combs and Amanda Hill. His father died when he was four years old and he and his sister, Doshie Combs, were reared by their step father, John Chiddix. The wedding of Virgil and Edna was held at eleven o'clock in the morning in the home of the bride's parents. She and her mother had made the wedding dress of a soft blue fabric with white collar, cuffs and belt. A white fichu filled in the low neckline. She wore a large white bow in her black curly hair and a lovely ornamental pin, a gift from her mother, was worn on her belt. Virgil wore a pinstripe suit with very wide cuffs, white shirt and socks, black shoes and a black tie with a white strip. They must have been a handsome couple as they stood before Rev. J. P. Simmons and recited their vows. After the ceremony, a large dinner was served and to the delight of the young nieces and nephews, the wedding cake was decorated with jelly beans.

"Edna and Virgil started their married life in Valley View, Cooke County, Texas in the home of his mother and step father. They were there only about four months when Virgil rented a house from his uncle, Simon Combs, his deceased father's oldest brother. Simon's wife, Minnie, was in a mental hospital with a nervous breakdown following the death of their son. After about a year, Edna and Virgil moved across the road to a rented farm. When the harvest was over the owner received one third of the grain produced and a quarter of the cotton. This was the rent payment. Their first child, Travis, was born while they were farming here. There was very little money so they bought what things they couldn't grow and then paid after the crops were harvested. They raised chickens, had a cow, and the garden provided practically everything they ate but Virgil decided they could do better in town. He moved his family to Nocona where he ran a delivery service with a hack pulled by his horse "Old Bob". He picked up the mail at the train, delivered groceries, furniture or anything else that was too large for people to carry. Later he opened what he called a confectioner's shop where he served pies, tarts, soups and soft drinks. When World War I started, the confectioner's shop was not a deferred job but farming was, so Virgil went back to the farm. He and Edna lived about a year at Long Branch, near her parents, but they kept hearing about the fertile land and good crops in Oklahoma. In 1920 they loaded up their meager possessions and moved to Washita County, Oklahoma near the small town of Rocky. Virgil rented a farm here and in the Spring Edna planted her garden and tended the existing orchard. It was on this farm that their second child was born in the Fall of 1921.

"In April of the following year, Edna entered the Florence Hospital in Cordell, Oklahoma for corrective surgery resulting from the birth of her last child. She survived the surgery and was near recovery when she developed pneumonia and died on 20 May 1922. She was buried in the Lone Star Cemetery at Rocky, Oklahoma."
