Nora Ethel Martin

(October 8, 1883 - April 30, 1964)

"Ethel Martin came with her parents to Texas from the State of Missouri. She attended school in Red Bud, near Bonita, Montague County, Texas. She was a pretty young girl with dark hair and big beautiful eyes. On 13 December 1903 she was married to James Monroe Reed by Rev. R. S. Hill, a Minister of the Gospel, in Montague County, Texas. Their marriage record was filed the 18 day of December 1903. Monroe was born 15 September 1882 to Alfred Webb Reed and his wife Elnora Bradley. Alfred W. Reed was a farmer and Baptist Minister.

"Ethel and Monroe did their courting on horseback. She was an excellent rider and could outride most of their crowd of friends, both men and women, even though she rode side saddle as the girls did in those days. Ethel and Monroe started their home in the Green Briar community and their three children were born there. They were tenant farmers but soon bought a small acreage that they later used as a down payment on a small ranch, west of Nocona, in the Long Branch community. Here they farmed and had a small herd of cattle. In 1918 they moved to Nocona so that Monroe could work in the cotton yard. They returned to the ranch and stayed until 1924. They moved back to Nocona where Monroe worked for a number of years as a ginner of cotton for the local gins. In later years he worked at the Nocona Athletic Company. Ethel worked for a short time in the Justin Leather Goods but decided making a home for Monroe and her two daughters was more important than trying to supplement the family income.

"Both Ethel and Monroe came from religious backgrounds and no doubt their early Christian training was responsible for their dedication to their church and community. Both of them played a very important part in the First Baptist Church. Ethel was active in Sunday School, Training Union and the Women's Missionary Society until she was forced to resign because of ill health. Monroe worked in his church with deep devotion, serving as a deacon for more than 50 years. Ethel and Monroe enjoyed people and everyone found a warm welcome when they visited their home. The entire town felt the loss when these two were no longer in their midst. Ethel died 30 April 1964 in Nocona and was buried in the Nocona Cemetery. Monroe died 21 October 1964 and was laid to rest by the side of Ethel. They had been married over 60 years." (Reta M.
