Myrtle Lois Reed

(September 11, 1908 - )

"Lois, like her sister, Jewel attended the one room school at Long Branch and then transferred to the Nocona school system. Commuting to Nocona from their ranch in Long Branch meant either riding horseback or going in a buggy to get to school so the family moved to Nocona in January of 1924. Lois graduated in 1927 and then attended Decatur Baptist College where she received her teaching certificate. To complete her degrees, she attended summer school and took extension courses at North Texas State University, Midwestern State and a college in Durant, Oklahoma. She received her BS in 1937 and her M. ED. in 1951. She taught school in Belcherville, Spanish Fort, Long Branch, Nocona and Burkburnett for a total of 42 years of teaching. She coached junior high girls basketball three years and won second in the District twice. She also coached volleyball, softball and track. She retired in 1971 and moved back to the home place in Nocona.

"Lois belongs to American Association of Retired People, National Retired Teachers Association and their local units and Senior Citizens. She was honored as Senior Citizen of the month in October of 1989 by the First National Bank of Nocona and the same month was honored as an outstanding member by her Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter. She attends the First Baptist Church where she has taught the Adult Ladies class for many years and has been active in the training union. Lois lives directly across the street from the First Baptist Church where her father was a deacon for so many years. Myrtle Lois Reed's tombstone at Nocona Cemetery reads, "42 Years a Teacher."
