Cumi Jewel Reed

(February 13, 1906 - February 15, 1988)

"Jewel attended a one room school in the Long Branch Community where they lived when she was a child. In 1918 she started school in Nocona and graduated there in 1925. She attended Decatur Baptist College one year and was certified to teach. She taught for 40 years and attended Summer Sessions at North Texas University to obtain both her BS and M.Ed. Degrees. She taught at many country schools in Montague County and at the Oddfellow Orphans Home in Corsicana. The last 27 years of her career was spent in teaching third grade in Burkburnett, Texas where she won many honors. She was the first teacher to receive a life membership in the Burkburnett Parent-Teacher Association and the first teacher to have an annual dedicated to her in the Burkburnett school system. She retired in 1971 and moved back to Nocona where she and her sister lived together in the old home house of their parents.

"Jewel died 15 February 1988 in Nocona and is buried in the Nocona Cemetery next to her parents. Cumi Jewell Reed's tombstone gives her birth and death dates and reads, "40 Years a Teacher."
