Ira Emmitt Martin

(March 26, 1880 - December 20, 1963)

"Emmitt was a tall, dark haired man with a long kindly face. A childhood illness, with high temperatures, left him mentally slow. As an adult this proved to be quite a handicap in trying to secure work to support his family. Emmitt married Gomez Stuart on 10 October 1920 in Montague County, Texas. They were married by the Baptist minister A. W. Reed. He was the father-in-law of Emmitt's sister, Ethel. On 2 July 1923, Gomez Martin divorced Emmitt Martin and had her maiden name restored. There were no issues from this union. On 23 August 1925, he married Fannie Jane Roberts, an orphan girl, born 6 February 1892 in Montague County, Texas. Emmitt farmed, to the best of his ability, for many years. Despite his handicap, he was a generous and kind man. He died 20 December 1963 in Nocona, Montague County, Texas and was buried in Starkey Cemetery just outside Nocona. Fannie died 24 November 1974 in a Rest home in Nocona and is buried beside her husband in the Starkey Cemetery." (Reta M.
