World War I draft registration for I C Brewer was competed Sep 12, 1918 at Local Board N. 1, Washington County, Greenville, Miss. It gives his age as 40, birth date May 20, 1878, occupation merchant and farmer. Wife Mary E Brewer. Home address Wulaumean, Miss.[or something like that.) (Following from Allen Reynolds of Greenville, 14 Dec 2002 by email: The name of the location you're researching is WEILENMAN. (pronounced: "Wee Lin Muhn - emphasis on Wee" ) I contacted a Mrs. Weilenman over at Stoneville Mississippi today and will be in touch with Mr. Weilenman later. I will forward your letter and query post on to him. I understand the Weilenman Store bldg. (It housed the post office as well) is still standing, though I've not been over there in a while.)

Isaiah, "Zaire" or "I. C." Brewer was primarily a merchant, first at Carter's Creek community in Pike County, MS., and later in at least two locations in McComb. He also tried his hand at cotton farming in the Mississippi Delta where James, and possibly Kate, were born. The family story is that the river flooded several years in a row and wiped him out. He was operating a "dry goods" store on Railroad Boulevard across from the Illinois Central RR depot in 1932 when the great depression forced its closure. There followed several short lived occupations until he was appointed one of McComb's six policemen in 1934 by the newly elected mayor Xavier A. Kramer whom he had helped to elect. He continued in that job, 7 days a week, 12 hours a day for $75 monthly until 1943 when he became a security guard at Camp Van Dorn. He continued in security work until he retired about 1950. He was a tall, rather thin man with a ruddy complexion. His greatest love was to discuss and dabble in politics.

James Brewer in June 1998 stated that I.C. hired niece Faye Brewer and nephew Luther Lee Greer to work in his store when each was a teenager. Alton Reeves lived with I.C. and Mary when he worked in McComb. When newly wed, R .B. Reeves and Madge lived with I.C. and Mary. This was given as an indication of the closeness of the extended family.
