Joe L Davis, 82, Retired Public Official, Dies Joe L Davis, who is believed to have served Chickasaw County as a public servant longer than any other person in history, died at 9:30 am, Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Dulaney, the victim of a heart attack. He was 82. Mr. Davis had dressed for Sunday School when he suffered the stroke. He died instantly. Funeral services were conducted from the Dulaney home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. W D Smith, Pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery with Houston Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were: Augustus Davis, John Morgan Davis, Gillum Davis, Harold Davis, Frank A Owen, Jack Owen, Dr. Charles Story and Tate Floyd. Leaves Four Children Mr. Davis is survived by two daughters, Ms. Dulaney of Houston and Mrs. Lon Harley Smith of Alexandria, Virginia; two sons, Joe L Davis, Jr., of Houston, Texas, and William F Davis of Gadsden, Ala.; a brother, Morgan Davis of Houston and two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Rhodes of Greenville, Miss., and Mrs. Edie Den Farr of Houston. Seven grandchildren also survive. His wife, the late Mrs. Carrie Ingram Davis, died Dec. 1 1956 and since then he had made his home with his daughter here. Mr. Davis was born Sept 9, 1875 in Chickasaw County. He was the son of the late John L Davis and Sally Porter Davis. Mr. Davis had devoted much of his adult life to the field of public service to his people. He first served as justice of the peace. From 1908 until 1916 he held the office of circuit clerk. From 1916 until 1920 he was sheriff of Chickasaw County, and from 1932 until 1940 he was chancery clerk. He was a member f the Houston School Board for many years, and for 45 years he served as a member of the Board of Stewards of the First Methodist Church. He was a member of the Houston Masonic Lodge.
