Thomas Porter Davis

(17 Feb 1874 - 30 Apr 1951)

Rites Held for T Porter Davis
Scores of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered Tuesday afternoon at the family residence to pay final tribute to Thomas Porter Davis, deputy chancery clerk and one of Okolona's most popular and widely known citizens, who died at 4:00 o'clock Monday afternoon. The solemn rites were conducted by the Rev. J R Grisham and members of the Methodist choir sang "Have Thine Own Way, Lord". Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Barry Funeral Home. Pallbearers were J Clint Peden, Woodrow Brand, both of Houston, J P Porter, E H Latimer, George Bean and Archie McDonell.
Mr. Davis had been in failing health for several years and became critically ill following a heart attack ten days before his death. He was 77, and had been a member of the Methodist Church since a very young man.
A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John L Davis, he was born at Van Vleet and spent all his life in Chickasaw County. He had lived in Okolona 50 years. For a number of years he was an employee of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad (now the GM&O) and for the past 18 years had been deputy chancery clerk. Efficient, friendly and courteous, he was never too busy to accommodate those who came into his office. Often in pain, he never failed to smile and make humorous remarks and his witty sayings were widely quoted. Practically every child, including his two small granddaughters to whom he was deeply devoted, called him "Porter", and he was loved by persons of all ages.
Mr. Davis leaves his wife, the former Miss Lillie Seale, a son, Robert Harding Davis of Port Arthur, Texas, a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Davis of Greenville, two brothers, Joe L Davis Sr. and Morgan Davis, both of Houston, a sister, Mrs. Oscar Rhodes of Van Vleet, a half brother, W P Knox and two granddaughters, Sara Harding Davis and Elizabeth Ann Davis.
Printed in the Okolona Messenger dated May 3, 1951.
