Birth and death information from Mitroon Arrenon - copy sent to Carol Kostakos Petranek from the Greek Archives office in Sparta on March 30, 2006, as a result of a letter requesting information on the Kostakos family. Birth: 1879 in Agios Ioannis; date that death was recorded was Nov. 9, 1982 - not his actual birth date.

It is thought that John went to France before coming to America - this is correct, as he sailed from LeHavre to New York.

Owned restaurant at: 292 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY., "The Chop House." The family lived in an apartment above the restaurant. This was in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

Story told by Georgia Kostakos Doukas to Carol Petranek, December 3, 2016: Frieda and Tony had a birthday party for one of their boys when they were young. Alice and Georgia and Al took their parents, Harikilia and John, to Frieda's "to get the old folks out of the house." While they were there, Tony was all excited about about whatever was going on in Greece at the time. He asked my grandfather what he thought about it. My grandfather said he wasn't interested, that this was his country. Tony said but you weren't born here. John got very upset and replied that he did not owe Greece anything; he came to America and this is where he made his life and where he became successful. If he had stayed in Greece, he would have been a stable boy his whole life. He was very passionate about his love for this country. America was his land.

From Andrew Kostakos, his son:
John's mother died when he was about one year old; his father died when he was about 8. Relatives took him in and fed him. He had to work. He never went to school. He worked for food for relatives on their farms, of olives and orange groves.

He came to Ellis Island and went to Stamford, Connecticut where he worked in a shoe factory. He was alone in Stamford. He then went to Pittsburgh. In the morning, men lined up to work and the foreman would choose whom he wanted and others would then leave. He didn't like that. From there he went to New York. (I think he was working for General Electric in Pittsburgh?)
